The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of experts established by the United Nations, predicts that the world will warm by up to 6.4°c this century.
As a result, the Polar ice caps are melting, putting the future of wildlife such as the polar bear at risk, while around the equator, deserts are expanding. Flooding is increasing as sea levels rise. We all need to act now to reduce the severity of these effects.
The extent of climate change prompted governments to agree the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. This established binding targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The EU agreed that by 2012, its emissions would be 8% lower than they were in 1990. (EU “Environment 2010” report). To achieve that target, the EU has taken action that will affect drivers and fleet operators.
